Veterinary sales representatives must sell their products to a highly focused niche group of customers - Veterinary Surgeons (Vets), Veterinary Nurses and associated Veterinary Practice Staff. In the UK, there are approximately 20,000 Veterinary Surgeons, employed in a variety of roles, including:
- general practice
- veterinary teaching
- research organisations and various Government Services i.e. the Department of Health, the Food Standards Agency, DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and the Department of Agriculture.
What A Veterinary Sales Job Will Entail
You will spend a lot of your time on the road visiting these locations, but gaining appointments is generally easier than most other pharmaceutical or healthcare sales jobs. Vets are very interested in clinical evidence and often like to see supporting data so you will need to be good at analysing and interpreting figures in order to decide what sort of evidence you should present in different situations.

Skills Required To Work In Veterinary Sales
Veterinary sales is a very competitive marketplace and you will need a number of core skills to succeed:
- Great Negotiation Skills - unlike most pharmaceutical representatives, veterinary reps have considerable autonomy and are able to agree their own pricing and deals
- Quick Thinking - you have to be able to quickly identify key services provided within a practice in order to select which products to focus on
- High levels of technical expertise
There are, however, no ABPI code requirements or constraints for veterinary sales jobs.
Who would be considered for a Veterinary Sales Position?
There are a number of different backgrounds that could lead you towards a veterinary sales job:
- Existing veterinary sales executives
- Medical or Pharmaceutical sales executives with the Genuine desire to succeed in a new Market.
