Getting Started in Medical Sales
Medical sales as an industry is potentially very lucrative, and because of that it is no surprise that a lot of people want to get into it. But how do you get started in the industry?
Well to start with the answer depends on whether you are just entering the world of work, or whether you want to move across from another industry or market.
Moving from a Different Industry
To get into medical sales you do not have to start your career in the industry, but can move over from a different industry. The main ways to move are from a different type of sales role, or from a medical career. See our page on switching roles for more information.
From University
The first and foremost way of getting involved in the industry is to get a degree. While not 100% essential, it will be a huge help. The degree should preferably be in a science or medical related degree to prove that you are able to understand medical terminology and concepts.
Work Experience
Once you are doing that degree, or indeed if you are currently doing a course like that, you should be looking at doing some sort of work experience. A lot of courses offer a year out placement option, or at least a shorter placement and you should take advantage of these options.
You would gain experience in the sort of environment in which you want to work in, and this will expose you to practices and procedures that will stand you in good stead in the future.
Build a Network of Contacts
As well as getting work experience, you should be looking at building up your network of contacts, maybe by attending recruitment fairs and industry events that are open to prospective candidates. Also, you can speak to your university lecturers and faculty staff to see if they have any contacts in the industry – if they have worked in a medical environment themselves then you may be surprised.
