Different Types of Medical Sales-related Roles

The term “medical sales jobs” is something of an umbrella term that takes in a range of different roles. There are many different types of medical products that you can be selling to a range of different medical professionals.

Of course those of you who already work within the industry will know all about these roles, however if you are looking to enter the industry or leaving your first job then you may find this list useful.

Below is a summary of the different types of roles available, with links to the relevant pages on the site. Whether you are looking to enter the industry or are already there and just want a new role, this should help you make an informed decision based on what is out there.

Entering into a career in this industry does not mean you will be selling the same thing to the same people for the rest of your life. There are plenty of other areas of the industry that you can move into if you want a new challenge, or to gain more experience.

Medical Device sales

Medical device sales sell mainly tangible goods, which can range from medical machinery to equipment like bandages. This involves selling to a wide range of people, from surgeons to nurses to GPs.

The big difference between this and pharmaceutical sales is that you have a sales target, and can sign an order form there and then. The sales process is simpler and a lot easier to track. The likelihood is that you will be more heavily commission based than pharmaceutical sales, but on the flipside selling tangible products is not as difficult as selling drugs or medicinal products/concepts.

Pharmaceutical sales

Pharmaceutical sales rep jobs are different to medical devices in that the representatives sell drugs or medicines, or sometimes simply the concepts of them, to healthcare professionals on a day to day basis. Your job is to encourage them to use your company’s pharmaceutical products by building and maintaining good relationships with them, and promoting the products in a professional and knowledgeable way.

Dental Sales

Being a dental sales rep is a more specialised version of medical device sales, and will see you selling dental products to a wide variety of places, including not just dental surgeries but to retailers and wholesalers as well. You could be selling products ranging from dental chairs to toothbrushes and toothpaste – a complete range. Get more information about dental sales here.

Veterinary Sales

This is very similar to regular pharmaceutical or medical device jobs…however instead you are selling equipments or medicines used for the treatment of sick animals! Veterinary sales reps usually specialise in one area of animal health, and sell their products to the relevant establishments. Read more on our veterinary sales page.

Managerial Positions

In all sales companies there is an opportunity for driven, hard working and successful individuals to move into a sales manager role, and medical sales is no different. If, after a few years, you want a change from life on the road then you may have the opportunity to move into more of a team co-ordination role. The potential is there to go all the way to the top – if you are good enough you could one day become a sales director. See our managerial jobs page for more details.
