Interview traps to avoid.

2011-05-04

Last time we spoke of the sort of preparation that any candidate who wishes to create a good impression on their interviewer should be doing prior to the big day.  Now I think we should take a look at what pitfalls we should be avoiding and what not to do if we don't want our prospective new employer to form a negative opinion of us.

First of all (and I know this sounds basic) make sure that your appearance is as it should be.  Look smart, tidy, and professional.  Don't be overbearing in the interview or adopt a superior air, even if you do feel that you have more experience and knowledge than the person conducting the interview.

An ability to express yourself clearly and concisely will also be tested.  Make sure you listen to the question you are being asked as opposed to the question you might think you are being asked, and then give a clear and to the point answer.

Give the impression that you are planning your career and that this role that you are being interviewed for is a vital part of that plan.  You don't want to come across as being haphazard in your approach or that the only reason you are in that interview is that you need a job, any job.

Finally for today, don't overemphasise the importance of money.  The company representative will want to see you buying into the role, the company ethos, and products.  A concentration on salary levels does not achieve the required results.

There are many more interview traps that are so easy to fall into.  Tune in again next week and we'll go through a few more.

Unitl then...
